Fly Fishing Lessons

JD Fly Fishing offers both group and private instruction for fly fishing instruction. The instruction typically takes place over two sessions. The first session provides an overview of the art of fly fishing, including equipment, rigging, insects and the flies that imitate them, knots, "reading" the water, and casting. This session typically lasts approximately two hours. The second session meets at a local lake, pond, or river to review casting and put students learning to use in pursuit of fish on the fly! The second session typically lasts approximately four hours. Students must have a valid fishing license to participate in the second session.

Fly Tying

JD Fly Fishing with work with student(s) to tailor a program to fit their needs. Group lessons are typically three to five students to provide the maximum learning experience for all, and are help at area establishments that can accomodate the class. Private lessons can be scheduled in my home, the student's home, or virtually anywhere there is a table to tie at and electricity to power lights for tying. The "typical" series of lessons consists of four two hour sessions, during which eight progressively more advanced patterns are tied, each building on the techniques learned tying previous patterns.

FlyTying
Flies & Lies Social Club gathering at Montrose Anglers

Flies & Lies Social Club

In addition to my guiding, fly tying and teaching endeavors, I am the founder and organizer of the Flies & Lies Social Club.

The Club is an extension of our local Fly Fishers International/Trout Unlimited Chapter, Gunnison Gorge Anglers, and gathers on a weekly basis throughout the fall, winter and spring, with occasional summer gatherings.

The driving force behind these gatherings in socialization, with a bit of fly tying for those so inclined.  In fact, the heckling of the fly tiers by the social crowd is much more the show than the actual tying, although there are always some talented tiers on hand, willing to share their expertise with anyone climbing their own fly tying learning curve.

As one attendee so aptly described a Flies & Lies gathering  “never serious, ever entertaining, slightly obnoxious.”  I think that pretty well sums it up!

Notice of dates, times, and locations of our gatherings are posted to the Gunnison Gorge Anglers Facebook Page  as well as area message boards.

“I moved to Montrose about 3 years ago. One of the first groups I joined was Flies and Lies tying group. Jeff was instrumental in getting me off to a great start and is always there when I have a question. Jeff is not only a positive person but an expert flyfisher and fly tyer.”
